Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.8/7.3-rc4. Affected by this issue is the function oxp_hid_remove of the component hid-oxp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper synchronization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-662. The product utilizes multiple threads or processes to allow temporary access to a shared resource that can only be exclusive to one process at a time, but it does not properly synchronize these actions, which might cause simultaneous accesses of this resource by multiple threads or processes. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: hid-oxp: use cancel_delayed_work_sync() in remove oxp_hid_remove() uses cancel_delayed_work() for all three delayed work items. cancel_delayed_work() only dequeues a pending work item without waiting for a currently executing callback to finish. If any of the work callbacks (oxp_rgb_queue_fn, oxp_btn_queue_fn, oxp_mcu_init_fn) is running at the time of removal, the callback continues executing concurrently with hid_hw_close() and hid_hw_stop(), accessing the HID device after it has been closed and stopped. Use cancel_delayed_work_sync() instead to ensure that any in-progress work callback completes before device teardown proceeds.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98500 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch eed737d89fa368251018a62e1d698958ef7dc635/abd24922c2a9797d6184be0561dd85e7bcdfd091 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
