Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4 nouveau nouveau_connector_detect release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. This issue affects the function nouveau_connector_detect of the component nouveau. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau: Fix runtime PM leak in nouveau_connector_detect() If nvif_outp_edid_get() fails, nouveau_connector_detect() returns early without dropping the runtime PM reference taken at the start of the function, keeping the device powered on until the next successful detect. Balance the reference on the error path like the other exit paths do.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98513 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
