Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nv1a_ram_new of the file drm/nouveau of the component nouveau. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau: Fix bridge reference leak in nv1a_ram_new() pci_get_domain_bus_and_slot() takes a reference to the PCI device, which is never released once the memory size has been read from its config space. Drop the reference before returning.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98516 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
