Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 nouveau validate_init memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function validate_init of the component nouveau. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau: Fix gem reference leak in validate_init() On the ttm_bo_reserve() failure and "vma not found" error paths, the loop breaks without adding the looked-up object to any validate list, so the reference taken by drm_gem_object_lookup() is never released; validate_fini() only walks the spliced lists. Drop the reference before breaking out on both paths.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98514 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch af2f48c12365866abb327d75c21a13bbde84719c/3c80e069470cf73c357c9edb5ec5fba20e6f6a98/957619120c26d6727efd18504e6b488673d3900a/74485cdc343060fce08f8f3990da524d783e43a7/8281930fc194ad448aaa5de8dd47fb6fb1cba327/030e93fc91d55d9487b3b85fc0712bb795d77834/9e13c398a23445baf38f0a59033dd9872a2bfe20/5ea72f7b7139b123713a7983448f910bc4514d9e is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
