A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Hyper-V VMBus. Hyper-V in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS hang) by sending a crafted encapsulated packet over the VMBus, aka "Hyper-V VMBus Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 12/14/2010 by Core Security with HP as MS10-102 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3960 since 10/14/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published 7 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51174 (MS10-102: Vulnerability in Hyper-V Could Allow Denial of Service (2345316)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90669 (Microsoft Hyper-V Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS10-102)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-102 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
