A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Directory Server (Directory Service Software). It has been declared as critical. Buffer overflow in the regular expression handler in Red Hat Directory Server 8.0 and 7.1 before SP6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (slapd crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted LDAP query that triggers the overflow during translation to a regular expression.
The bug was discovered 05/09/2008. The weakness was presented 05/12/2008 as Bug 444712 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1677 since 04/03/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
