Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in pypa virtualenv up to 21.14.8. Affected by this vulnerability is the function shutil.copy of the file pip/__init__.py of the component app-data copy seeder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
virtualenv is a tool for creating isolated virtual python environments. Prior to 21.14.9, the app-data copy seeder uses shutil.copy() to copy cached package files into later environments, causing cached source modes to override the current run's umask. A cache populated under a permissive umask can therefore produce files writable by another local account in a later traversable environment, allowing package code such as pip/__init__.py to be modified and executed by the environment owner. The attacker cannot force the earlier umask, and a private destination parent prevents access. This issue is fixed in version 21.14.9.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-113720 since 10/20/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 21.14.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
