Details
A vulnerability was found in Wordnet 2.0/2.1/3.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function searchwn. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the searchwn function in Wordnet 2.0, 2.1, and 3.0 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long command line option. NOTE: this issue probably does not cross privilege boundaries except in cases in which Wordnet is used as a back end.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2008. The weakness was shared 05/12/2008 (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2149 since 05/12/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34088 (Debian DSA-1634-1 : wordnet - stack and heap overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
