Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine (mpengine.dll) 1.1.3520.0 and 0.1.13.192, as used in multiple Microsoft products, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (disk space exhaustion) via a file with "crafted data structures" that trigger the creation of large temporary files, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-1437.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2008. The weakness was presented 05/13/2008 by Sowhat with Nevis Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1438 since 03/21/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32313 (MS08-029: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine Could Allow Denial of Service (952044)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90436 (Microsoft Malware Protection Engine Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (MS08-029)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6109.
