Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Imager up to 1.005. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function i_readgif_low. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Imager::File::GIF versions before 1.006 for Perl allow out-of-bounds reads when consolidating GIF images. With `gif_consolidate => 1`, palette indices from the image are used without checking the colour table's bounds. The i_readgif_low routine reads beyond the heap allocation and copies the bytes into output pixels. The default GIF reader is not affected. The same code ships bundled in the Imager distribution. An attacker supplying a crafted GIF can disclose adjacent heap memory through the decoded output and may crash the process.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-112202 since 10/19/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.006 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dec96f12b3d8a7fd94e86264953a5e4919dd6036 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
