axengine.exe in Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution 6.8.x and 6.9.x before 6.9.176 generates credentials with a fixed salt or without any salt, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess encrypted domain credentials.

The bug was discovered 05/14/2008. The weakness was released 05/18/2008 by Brett Moore with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at symantec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2291 since 05/18/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
