Apple iCal 3.0.1 on Mac OS X allows remote CalDAV servers, and user-assisted remote attackers, to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a .ics file containing (1) a large 16-bit integer on a TRIGGER line, or (2) a large integer in a COUNT field on an RRULE line.
The bug was discovered 05/21/2008. The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2008 by CORE Security with Core Security Consulting Services (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2006 since 04/28/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115809 (Apple iCal Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6179.
