CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Jupyter nbconvert up to 7.17.1. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file nbconvert/preprocessors/extractoutput.py of the component ExtractOutputPreprocessor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The nbconvert tool, jupyter nbconvert, converts Jupyter notebooks to various other formats via Jinja templates. From 5.4.0 until 7.17.2, ExtractOutputPreprocessor in nbconvert/preprocessors/extractoutput.py joins the attacker-controlled cell output metadata filename to output_files_dir without limiting the result to the intended directory. When a victim converts a malicious notebook with the markdown, LaTeX, reStructuredText, or AsciiDoc exporter, path traversal in the output filename can write attacker-controlled output data to arbitrary locations accessible to the victim. Running the notebook cell again replaces the malicious output metadata, but merely converting the supplied notebook does not. This issue is fixed in version 7.17.2.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-114140 since 10/20/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Upgrading to version 7.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
