Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in rthalley dnspython up to 2.8.x. This affects the function dns.name.from_wire_parser of the file dns.name of the component DNS Decompression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
dnspython is a DNS toolkit for Python. Prior to 2.9.0, dns.name.from_wire_parser follows attacker-controlled DNS compression pointer chains without a hop limit. A malicious DNS wire-format message can force excessive pointer traversal during name decompression, causing high CPU use, application degradation, or denial of service in applications that process untrusted DNS messages. This issue is fixed in version 2.9.0.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-114605 since 10/21/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy.
