pylint-dev Pylint up to 4.0.8 Module Statistics Cache pickle.load deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in pylint-dev Pylint up to 4.0.8 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function pickle.load of the component Module Statistics Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Pylint is a static code analyser for Python. From 0.15.2 until 4.0.9, Pylint stores module statistics in predictable files under PYLINT_HOME and loads those files with pickle.load on a later run. An attacker who can write to a shared, group-writable, or otherwise untrusted cache directory can replace a stats cache with crafted serialized data, causing arbitrary code to execute with the privileges of the user who next runs Pylint. The default per-user cache is not normally writable by another user. This issue is fixed in version 4.0.9.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-114608 since 10/21/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
