Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.5 ccp __sev_platform_init_handle_init_ex_path deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.5. Affected by this issue is the function __sev_platform_init_handle_init_ex_path of the component ccp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: ccp - Fix possible deadlock in SEV init failure path __sev_platform_init_handle_init_ex_path() calls rmp_mark_pages_firmware() with locked=false while the parent function of init_ex_path already acquired the sev_cmd_mutex. In the case of an RMPUPDATE failure for any page after the first, the cleanup path would invoke reclaim pages which would result in a deadlock in sev_do_cmd. Pass locked=true to honor the lock status of the parent function.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98871 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8e7e06ee7c2938ee3fa31a61cc5289a45c8c13f1/ffd3a3df92be697eb78118a146c6a5d5e6c1f724/364f3841bc22c72b6e2cb72a1e3c91c9c8fc1ef4/b0e7ec0dab242c5e480121ba12400d0513e37ca2 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
