Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52 host1x host1x_device_init ops null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation of the argument ops results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-98876. The attack requires a local approach. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.221/6.1.188/6.6.157/6.12.110/6.18.52. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function host1x_device_init of the component host1x. The manipulation of the argument ops with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: host1x: bus: Fix missing ops null check in error teardown In host1x_device_init(), the error teardown paths do not check client->ops before dereferencing it, unlike the forward init paths which correctly guard with 'client->ops &&'. This can result in a NULL pointer dereference if client->ops is NULL. Fix by adding the missing client->ops check in both the teardown and teardown_late labels.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98876 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d8d5b6e02fc281dea33d6b0b0fadaccea56f2067/f1fa6c936fa9de80ae446ba5e76e227e991b8e56/74bd1f05d9ba2d6672d30ccafe80a38104c1f73f/62851e7b0e55de6fe08da08bc41fd587fbcb0e9b/29375e071ea201fe97bafe1d2ad9d9f30311abfb/71d25f668bc5c0f36ea843462e12307dea45aaa3 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
