Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52. This affects the function devm_pm_runtime_enable of the component mailbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mailbox: imx: Use devm_pm_runtime_enable() sashiko complained about early usage of the device while probe isn't completed. This can be mitigated by delaying the pm_runtime_enable() into the removal path instead doing it early. This ensures that in an error case the device is removed (and imx_mu_shutdown()) before pm_runtime_disable() so we don't have to do this manually. For the order to work, lets move devm_mbox_controller_register() until after the pm-runtime part. So the reverse order will be mbox-controller removal followed by disabling pm runtime. Use devm_pm_runtime_enable(), remove manual pm_runtime_disable() invocations and move the pm_runtime handling in probe before devm_mbox_controller_register().
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98904 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b30a047744ea4344bb6f854b0a052cf276349128/adcaa21d50c3a4c884f4d0b7a95fa3bd7a07cf84/1f602619e408b6e9655ee76656a2a5ab6e89c5e4 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
