Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9 perf/core perf_event_open privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9. This issue affects the function perf_event_open of the component perf/core. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/core: Check kernel access when kernel callchains are requested perf_event_open() currently gates perf_allow_kernel() only on !attr.exclude_kernel. However, users can still request kernel callchain collection with attr.exclude_callchain_kernel == 0 even when attr.exclude_kernel == 1. That still requires kernel profiling privilege, but the existing check does not enforce it. Update the permission check to call perf_allow_kernel() when either kernel sampling is requested or kernel callchains are requested. This keeps permission checks aligned with requested data and prevents unprivileged use of kernel callchain capture.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98937 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56 or 7.2.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 132bee76097be421ab3012130b5b506324cf2be1/2581b43e162cfc43e6f5d8dd8d2b38f3441550de/6e187281f978a2bff98ead6aa40f8ddc9a2c9afb/a4573a3838ae4fc73b70019cfa1dac9aaea7cc2f is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
