Linux Kernel up to 7.2.9 Rust request_irq race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.9 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function request_irq of the component Rust. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98938. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.9. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function request_irq of the component Rust. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rust: irq: pass RegistrationInner as cookie to request_irq With commit ba268514ea14 ("rust: devres: fix race condition due to nesting"), Devres::new() returns Result<Self> by value instead of initializing in-place via PinInit. Because request_irq() is called inside Devres::new(), registration.inner is still uninitialized when the IRQ is enabled, so accessing registration.inner.device() in the IRQ callback can read uninitialized memory. Fix this by storing the Device and handler pointer in RegistrationInner and passing RegistrationInner as the IRQ cookie after its fields are initialized. This is not needed in mainline because commit 98c63ce4d760 ("rust: irq: make Registration compatible with lifetime-bound drivers") removed Devres from irq::Registration and moved request_irq() after all fields are initialized.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98938 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.2.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9a7931e847f338a687e96cde9f37e0cff83ddd84 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
