Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52 libertas lbs_hard_start_xmit data out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.52. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function lbs_hard_start_xmit of the component libertas. The manipulation of the argument data with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: libertas: reject short monitor TX frames In monitor mode, lbs_hard_start_xmit() casts skb->data to a radiotap TX header, skips that header, and then copies the 802.11 destination address from offset 4 in the remaining frame. The generic length check only rejects zero-length and oversized skbs, so a short monitor frame can be read past the end of the skb data. Require enough bytes for the radiotap TX header and the destination address field before using the monitor-mode header layout.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98890 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 68c92c991ddb75dfd3fd62a94a1d4d2dde44dc3c/d865dd6de8295f2bfaa83f0f5d49d2bef1543065/6576baa3fdbaa91fa75e4ba27095f4b8a27349a8/b657cc98d7936c5d9ed7e0e1944ad0e1f36375bb/443fac3de65c76544b450b9f9903be8989150d55/cdcfd662c67833d89ee3d912efde2eb67c8a7326/13ff543e0b2c713aedeaadadde686686e949dc78 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
