Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.56/7.2.10 mt76 mt7915_stop_hardware locking

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.56/7.2.10. This affects the function mt7915_stop_hardware of the component mt76. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a locking vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-667. The product does not properly acquire or release a lock on a resource, leading to unexpected resource state changes and behaviors. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mt76: mt7915: disable rx napi when removing device Unloading the mt7915e module with a MT7916 triggers multiples WARN in __netif_napi_del_locked() and in page_pool_disable_direct_recycling() because the driver does not disable the napi before destroying it. This is troublesome since on MT7916 it is required to unload the module and reinsert it with a different enable_6ghz parameter to change the frequency. The system generally becomes unstable after reinserting the module. Fix it by disabling rx napi inside mt7915e itself, even through napi rx is enabled in the mt76 generic code. Disabling it in the mt76 generic code was previously attempted and reverted because napi was disabled too late and rx handlers could access freed structures. Note that the tx side is enabled and disabled by the mt76 generic code. It is disabled in mt7915_stop_hardware() since, unlike mt7915_unregister_device(), is it also called in the probe path if an error happens after rx napi is enabled.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98957 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.57 or 7.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0f9afe238eeb79829f0f92f376ba3a20781caccd/7199ee4b47de0b61fa6455a1587c5ab645ebe262/916c484d29d82f45c281da2786fcd6a1284430ce is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
