Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.159/6.12.112/6.18.56/7.2.10. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gpio_exar_probe of the component gpio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: exar: initialize the ID before registering its cleanup devm_add_action_or_reset() invokes the cleanup action immediately when registering the action fails. gpio_exar_probe() currently stores the allocated ID in exar_gpio only after registering the action, so that failure makes exar_devm_ida_free() release ID 0. If the allocated ID is nonzero, this leaks that ID and can free ID 0 belonging to another device. Store the ID before registering the cleanup action so both the immediate failure path and normal device teardown release the correct allocation.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98971 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 6.6.160, 6.12.113, 6.18.57 or 7.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bf3d841ef12fcbec4458e2750956b738b043a226/b78c114600ae3df90c083c72c290437b068577c8/01318927a9055136c207399eeb36ce07becac179/f7ec4dbd2a073dd53b6349be1c586fe8580dd6b2/4d69e74034b208588636ecc177e0dd43a7696af3 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
