Linux Kernel up to 7.2.10 CAN Subsystem net/can/af_can.c init_can_skb buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.10 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function init_can_skb of the file net/can/af_can.c of the component CAN Subsystem. This manipulation causes buffer overflow. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-99066. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.10. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function init_can_skb of the file net/can/af_can.c of the component CAN Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: dev: init_can_skb(): restore skb header initialization Commit 9f10374bb024 ("can: remove private CAN skb headroom infrastructure") removed the skb_reset_mac_header()/skb_reset_network_header()/ skb_reset_transport_header() calls from init_can_skb(). As a result, RX skbs from alloc_can_skb() and friends again carry mac_header = 0xFFFF. When such an skb reaches packet_rcv_spkt() (SOCK_PACKET), the push length calculation overflows and triggers skb_under_panic -> kernel BUG -> full machine panic. The same issue was originally reported in 2014 on linux-can and fixed by commit 969439016d2c ("can: add missing initialisations in CAN related skbuffs"). packet_rcv_spkt() itself has never been hardened: only packet_rcv() and tpacket_rcv() gained dev_has_header() checks in commit d549699048b4 ("net/packet: fix packet receive on L3 devices without visible hard header").

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-99066 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8078375dfd0baecd9f1b7b06bb2d6f88d7cb8632/0a04c0cb8606ff88399489d03ef255afe90d0d5f is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
