Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.56/7.2.10. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component gve. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gve: fix XSK buffer leak when rings are stopped GVE does not free XSK buffers when resetting ring state as a part of stopping queues. This causes all XSK buffers which are posted to the NIC to be leaked. Free XSK buffers attached to an allocated buf_state when stopping rings. This issue was hit in production.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-99047 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 6.18.57 or 7.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 506f9de069d07a72b9887ce3edd2fdf32f4953aa/7a7e6bbbf0586c1f62f0cc7d9a2877d8a5e5aaf7/73670ddb91a4d22e1deb3efd962242de1ec48e90 is able to eliminate this problem.
