Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.159/6.12.112/6.18.56/7.2.10 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function scrub_print_warning_inode of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: scrub: fix local_root reference leak in scrub_print_warning_inode() When paths_from_inode() fails, scrub_print_warning_inode() jumps to err without dropping the reference taken by btrfs_get_fs_root(), leaking a reference to the root every time path resolution fails while printing scrub warnings. Every other error and success path of the function drops the reference. Drop the reference on the paths_from_inode() failure path too.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-99067 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/23/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 6.6.160, 6.12.113, 6.18.57 or 7.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 41cabfbf3532e2a2a17be9e4876042a5393b5c8d/452a435b74f7f598a343c51f7c89c5d2244384b6/12ba7d8b9cd45a2c6aa8f37c3f4b8a50422fb549/a7e5992bc37088f9b00e531955022aef69de3dc7/1fd742c7479961da6d0bb794ef8ac6b7b9442847 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
