Details
A vulnerability was found in Pan. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The PartsBatch class in Pan 0.132 and earlier does not properly manage the data structures for Parts batches, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted .nzb file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 05/16/2008. The weakness was shared 06/02/2008 by Pavel Polischouk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2363 since 05/21/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/11/2019).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33781 (GLSA-200807-15 : Pan: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42750), Tenable (33781), SecurityFocus (BID 29421†), OSVDB (45944†) and Secunia (SA30717†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
