Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in vllm-project vLLM up to 0.23.x. Affected by this vulnerability is the function load_audio of the file /v1/chat/completions of the component AudioMediaIO. The manipulation of the argument input_audio/audio_url with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
vLLM from 0.19.0 before 0.24.0 contains a decompression bomb vulnerability because the AudioMediaIO multimodal path calls load_audio without the max_duration_s decoded-duration limit. Authenticated attackers can send small compressed audio via input_audio or audio_url in /v1/chat/completions requests that expands to huge decoded PCM, exhausting server memory.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-116175 since 10/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 0.24.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
