Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in boneIO up to 1.5.x. Affected is the function create_timedatectl_sudoers_file of the file boneio/webui/routes/timezone_sudoers.py of the component Sudoers Management. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a toctou vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-367. The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check. This can cause the product to perform invalid actions when the resource is in an unexpected state. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
boneIO Black contains a TOCTOU race condition in the create_timedatectl_sudoers_file() function in boneio/webui/routes/timezone_sudoers.py. The function writes sudoers rules to a predictable temporary file, validates them, then installs them with root privileges. A local attacker can exploit the race window between validation and installation to substitute malicious content, or use the predictable filename for symlink attacks, resulting in arbitrary sudoers rule injection and local privilege escalation to root. This issue was fixed in version 1.6.0.
The advisory is shared for download at cert.pl. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-77059 since 08/20/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
