Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Sun Java Active Server Pages up to 4.0.1 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument Path with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in unspecified ASP applications in Sun Java Active Server Pages (ASP) Server before 4.0.3 allow remote attackers to read or delete arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the Path parameter to the MapPath method.
The bug was discovered 06/03/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/04/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2403 since 05/22/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33439 (Sun Java System ASP < 4.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 4.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42831), Tenable (33439), SecurityFocus (BID 29538†), OSVDB (46017†) and Secunia (SA30523†).
