The downloads manager in Opera before 11.01 on Windows does not properly determine the pathname of the filesystem-viewing application, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that hosts an executable file.
The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2011 by Jordi Chancel with Opera (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0450. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51774 (Opera < 11.01 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118943 (Opera Web Browser Prior to 11.01 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 11.01 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
