ggml-org llama.cpp GGUF Tensor Offset llama_model_loader tensor offsets out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ggml-org llama.cpp. Affected is the function llama_model_loader of the component GGUF Tensor Offset Handler. Executing a manipulation of the argument tensor offsets can lead to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2024-58399. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ggml-org llama.cpp (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function llama_model_loader of the component GGUF Tensor Offset Handler. The manipulation of the argument tensor offsets with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

llama.cpp before b2731 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in llama_model_loader that allows attackers to read memory outside the mapped model file via crafted GGUF tensor offsets. Attackers can supply a crafted or truncated GGUF model file with arbitrary 64-bit tensor offsets to crash the process or load adjacent process memory as model weights.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-58399 since 10/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Applying the patch b2731 is able to eliminate this problem.
