Details
A vulnerability has been found in libsdl-org SDL_image up to 2.8.12/3.4.8 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function IMG_LoadLBM_IO of the file src/IMG_lbm.c of the component LBM Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SDL_image through 3.4.8 and through 2.8.12 contains a stack out-of-bounds read vulnerability in IMG_LoadLBM_IO() in src/IMG_lbm.c that skips bitplane count validation when HAM mode is set. Attackers can supply a crafted ILBM file with more than 8 HAM bitplanes to read past the colormap stack array, causing crashes or disclosing stack memory.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-117557 since 10/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/27/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
