Details
A vulnerability was found in Symantec AntiVirus (Anti-Malware Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Intel AMS2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Intel Alert Management System (aka AMS or AMS2), as used in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE) 10.x before 10.1 MR10, Symantec System Center (SSC) 10.x, and Symantec Quarantine Server 3.5 and 3.6, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long string to msgsys.exe, related to the AMSSendAlertAct function in AMSLIB.dll in the Intel Alert Handler service (aka Symantec Intel Handler service); a long (2) modem string or (3) PIN number to msgsys.exe, related to pagehndl.dll in the Intel Alert Handler service; or (4) a message to msgsys.exe, related to iao.exe in the Intel Alert Originator service.
The weakness was presented 01/27/2011 by Junaid Bohio (TippingPoint) with TELUS Security Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0110 since 12/31/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51813 (Symantec Alert Management System 2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM11-002, SYM11-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 10.1 MR10 eliminates this vulnerability.Proper firewalling of tcp/38292 is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9423. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64940), Tenable (51813), SecurityFocus (BID 45936†), Secunia (SA43099†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1024996†).
