OpenTelemetry Python up to 1.44.x JaegerPropagator JaegerPropagator.extract denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenTelemetry Python up to 1.44.x. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function JaegerPropagator.extract of the component JaegerPropagator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenTelemetry Python provides the Python API and SDK for OpenTelemetry. Prior to 1.45.0, JaegerPropagator.extract() in opentelemetry-propagator-jaeger processes inbound uberctx-* baggage values without entry, per-entry byte, or total-byte limits. Services that enable the optional Jaeger propagator can perform unnecessary CPU work and short-lived heap allocations when an untrusted carrier supplies numerous or oversized values, contributing to denial of service when transport-level limits do not constrain the input. Common default Python HTTP server limits reduce the practical impact, while custom getters, non-HTTP transports, or raised header limits increase exposure. This issue is fixed in version 1.45.0.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-116694 since 10/26/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 1.45.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
