Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Assimp up to 6.0.5. This issue affects the function MD2Importer::ValidateHeader of the component MD2Importer. The manipulation of the argument numFrames/numVertices with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Assimp through 6.0.5 contains an integer overflow vulnerability in MD2Importer::ValidateHeader() that allows attackers to bypass frame table bounds checks using crafted header fields. Attackers can supply a malicious .md2 file whose numFrames and numVertices values wrap the 32-bit size check, causing heap out-of-bounds reads that crash applications or expose adjacent heap memory.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-117608 since 10/27/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/28/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
