It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function predicate_parse of the component tracing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Check operator stack capacity before pushing predicate_parse() uses the first operator stack entry before processing any opening parentheses. A push then increments top before writing. The existing check still permits that write when top already points to the last allocated entry, which can access beyond the operator stack. Reject the push when top reaches the last allocated entry.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-99142 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/28/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.59 or 7.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a866a8a753922cdf7710b8eb3f686dc0efc06505/75e894f92417390f0ef44fd350f2d3634c784876/c47a7b11bcb3d45e29723afcf6336866476b1d08 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
