Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12 viai2c-wmt wmt_i2c_probe memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12. The impacted element is the function wmt_i2c_probe of the component viai2c-wmt. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory leak. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-99161. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12. This vulnerability affects the function wmt_i2c_probe of the component viai2c-wmt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: viai2c-wmt: Fix clock leak in wmt_i2c_probe() In wmt_i2c_probe(), i2c->clk is acquired using of_clk_get(). If any subsequent operation fails or when the module is unloaded, the clock reference count is never decremented via clk_put(), leading to a resource leak. Switch to devm_clk_get() so that the clock is automatically managed and released.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-99161 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 6.18.59 or 7.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5d476bb76b7d72d8b7ed04a9c614900b097e3af7/1875de656370c89b99a150d220df876288ee0344/aaabefc79b0ff0018e8e3832169bbe359d0551fc is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
