Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 10 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function ip_set_srcfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer signedness error in the ip_set_srcfilter function in the IP Multicast Filter in uts/common/inet/ip/ip_multi.c in the kernel in Sun Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris before snv_92 allows local users to execute arbitrary code in other Solaris Zones via an SIOCSIPMSFILTER IOCTL request with a large value of the imsf->imsf_numsrc field, which triggers an out-of-bounds write of kernel memory. NOTE: this was reported as an integer overflow, but the root cause involves the bypass of a signed comparison.
The bug was discovered 06/12/2008. The weakness was presented 06/16/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2710 since 06/16/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1232 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33206 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 137111-08), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115833 (Sun Solaris Security Vulnerability in IP Multicast Filter Processing of Sockets (1019266.1)).
Upgrading to version 10 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43068), Tenable (33206), SecurityFocus (BID 29699†), OSVDB (46193†) and Secunia (SA30693†). See VDB-43680, VDB-43581, VDB-46222 and VDB-43853 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
