Linux Kernel up to 7.2.12 hip04_eth hip04_eth.c hip04_mac_probe netdev_ops null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.12. This affects the function hip04_mac_probe of the file drivers/net/ethernet/hisilicon/hip04_eth.c of the component hip04_eth. Performing a manipulation of the argument netdev_ops results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-99199. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.12. This affects the function hip04_mac_probe of the file drivers/net/ethernet/hisilicon/hip04_eth.c of the component hip04_eth. The manipulation of the argument netdev_ops with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: hisilicon: hip04_eth: Move setting of netops to fix crash hip04_mac_probe() calls of_phy_connect() before ndev->netdev_ops is assigned. phy_attach_direct() -> phy_link_topo_add_phy() reads dev->netdev_ops through netdev_need_ops_lock() since the commit in question, so probing crashes with a NULL pointer dereference when CONFIG_NET_SHAPER is enabled. Assign netdev_ops before the PHY attach, as was done for emac in commit 7c9f391ec89c ("net: emac: move setting of netops to fix crash").

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-99199 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 7.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1c2f9c3a63baabfb965a23a00f026f3ddcaadb24/0d9342701f14ec0a9465772b7cd5d515c1ecd818 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
