Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12 gpiolib gpiod_set_array_value_complex memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12. This affects the function gpiod_set_array_value_complex of the component gpiolib. Such manipulation leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-99190. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.58/7.2.12 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function gpiod_set_array_value_complex of the component gpiolib. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpiolib: fix memory leak in gpiod_set_array_value_complex() on error paths A drive-by review by Sashiko reports that, after a failed call to gpiochip_set_multiple(), gpiod_set_array_value() returns abruptly, bypassing the freeing of possibly alloced bitmaps, potentially leaking memory. It is an unlikely error path, but is possible. Defer the return code check until after the bitmap_free() block.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-99190 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/28/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.18.59 or 7.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 78189c0e35abbcdab3b8ab0b764d578c02900734/890c3bf08e0fc09eff788a6cfeded7d21b4d3e9d/c28846ca1ac6134881114d272314623c8433e372 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
