Details
A vulnerability has been found in Labstack Echo up to 4.15.x/5.3.x and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Static File Handlers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Echo is a Go web framework. Prior to 4.16.0 and 5.4.0, Echo's static file handlers can normalize dot segments after route matching and serve a file through a public static route even though the corresponding direct path is protected by route-level middleware. An unauthenticated attacker can read files that an application intended to protect with route-level middleware, when those files are also reachable through a static filesystem mount after path normalization. This vulnerability is the result of an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-55677. This issue is fixed in 4.16.0 and 5.4.0.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-118654 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 4.16.0 or 5.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
