Details
A vulnerability has been found in giuspen CherryTree up to 1.7.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CtStorageXmlHelper::_create_image_from_xml of the component XML Helper. The manipulation of the argument filename with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
CherryTree through 1.7.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in CtStorageXmlHelper::_create_image_from_xml that trusts unvalidated embedded-file 'filename' attributes in XML documents. Attackers can craft a .ctd, .ctz, or .ctx document with an absolute or ~/ filename and no data, so saving embeds files like ~/.ssh/id_rsa into the document.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-118693 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally.
