Details
A vulnerability was found in gopasspw gopass up to 1.16.x. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function Prune/IsDir of the component Filesystem Storage Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
gopass before 1.17.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the filesystem storage backend that allows attackers to delete directories outside the password store via ../ entry names in Prune and IsDir. Collaborators with write access to a shared git-synced store can introduce crafted entries, causing a victim's recursive gopass rm -r to delete arbitrary directory trees.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-118756 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.17.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
