A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat 5.x (Application Server Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component ServletContect. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. Apache Tomcat 7.0.0 through 7.0.3, 6.0.x, and 5.5.x, when running within a SecurityManager, does not make the ServletContext attribute read-only, which allows local web applications to read or write files outside of the intended working directory, as demonstrated using a directory traversal attack.
The weakness was presented 02/07/2011 with Apache Tomcat Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tomcat.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3718 since 10/01/2010. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tomcat.apache.org.
