Details
A vulnerability has been found in RandomBit Botan up to 3.12.x and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function AutoSeeded_RNG::clear of the component AutoSeeded_RNG. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a random values vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-330. The product uses insufficiently random numbers or values in a security context that depends on unpredictable numbers. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Botan is a C++ cryptography library. From 3.7.0 until 3.13.0, an application that calls AutoSeeded_RNG::clear() and then calls randomize with an empty output buffer while the generator is unseeded can cause AutoSeeded_RNG to mark itself seeded without consulting the configured entropy source. On builds without BOTAN_HAS_SYSTEM_RNG, the fallback uses only a clock value and process ID, so a later non-empty request can produce output from predictable state. This issue is fixed in version 3.13.0.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-118765 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
Upgrading to version 3.13.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
