Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in DigitalBazaar forge up to 1.4.0. This impacts the function BigInteger.prototype.modInverse of the file lib/jsbn.js of the component RSA Key Generation. Executing a manipulation of the argument modulus can lead to infinite loop.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-118781. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in DigitalBazaar forge up to 1.4.0. This vulnerability affects the function BigInteger.prototype.modInverse of the file lib/jsbn.js of the component RSA Key Generation. The manipulation of the argument modulus with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, the affected implementation used BigInteger.prototype.modInverse(), bnModInverse(), lib/jsbn.js, RSA public exponent e to process the relevant input or security decision. node-forge's bundled jsbn implementation entered an infinite loop when BigInteger.prototype.modInverse() received a negative value or modulus. An attacker who could control the RSA public exponent passed to key generation, or a direct modInverse() operand, could block the Node.js event loop at full CPU. Parsed DER, PEM, JWK, PKCS#12, X.509, and TLS values are unsigned and cannot trigger this issue. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-118781 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 1.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
