Details
A vulnerability has been found in digitalbazaar forge up to 1.4.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component forge.http. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a prototype pollution vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1321. The product receives input from an upstream component that specifies attributes that are to be initialized or updated in an object, but it does not properly control modifications of attributes of the object prototype. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Forge (also called node-forge) is a native implementation of Transport Layer Security in JavaScript. Prior to 1.4.1, the forge.http client stored cookie names and paths from Set-Cookie response headers in ordinary JavaScript objects. A malicious server could use the cookie name __proto__ so that the attacker-controlled cookie path was written as a property on Object.prototype, or use inherited names such as constructor to modify Object. An empty cookie value could use the removal path to delete an inherited Object.prototype property. Applications using forge.http directly or through forge.xhr are affected; applications that do not use forge.http are unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-118777 since 10/28/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
