Details
A vulnerability was found in py-pdf pypdf up to 6.21.3. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Page Tree Flattening. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.21.4, pypdf can consume excessive memory while parsing a crafted PDF page tree containing many shared resources. Page-tree flattening copies page dictionary and inherited resource entries without a document-wide entry budget, allowing the crafted resource structure to cause disproportionate allocations. This issue is fixed in version 6.21.4.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-119204 since 10/29/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely.
