Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Element Web and Element Desktop up to 1.12.31. Affected by this issue is the function loadSession of the component Guest Session Handler. The manipulation of the argument guest_user_id/guest_access_token with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Element Web and Element Desktop before 1.12.32 accept guest credentials from URL fragment parameters in loadSession, allowing remote unauthenticated attackers to log out users and clear local stores. Attackers can lure logged-in users into opening links with guest_user_id and guest_access_token to force an attacker-controlled guest session and destroy unbacked end-to-end encryption keys.
